Woodlands Masters Swimming has its beginnings in the late 1970’s. Candy Pew, Laura Thomas and Tom Boak, all swimming independently of one another, attended the national championships in San Antonio, Texas in 1978. Initially, swimmers from the Woodlands competed as part of Texas Gulf Masters, and then in 1982 As Lone Star Masters. Although not a registered team, The Woodlands was well recognized in the swimming world as the host of the 1978 AAU Long Course National Championships and the 1982 Short Course, 1987 and 1990 Long Course United States Masters Swimming National Championships. By 1988 the team had grown substantially in size, and split from Lone Star Masters to become The Woodlands Masters Swim Team. WMST has hosted numerous local and zone meets, including being the annual host of The Woodlands Relays (for the past eighteen years), in addition to hosting the 2007 USMS Long Course National Championships. WMST has had three members inducted into the International Masters Hall of Fame: Carolyn Boak as an athlete, Joann Leilich as an athlete, and Tom Boak as a contributor. WMST provides great opportunities for fitness and competitive swimming for adults of all ages – and we have fun, too.
Here's a great article from USMS Swimmer in October 2007 which gives you some more of the background to WMST.
